Toyota is recalling over 100,000 pickup trucks and Lexus SUVs in the U.S. due to potential engine debris that could cause the vehicles to stall. This recall affects certain 2022 and 2023 Tundra trucks and Lexus LX models equipped with the V35A six-cylinder engine.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explained that debris from the manufacturing process may contaminate the engine, leading to main bearing failure. Main bearings are crucial as they allow the crankshaft to rotate within the engine assembly while running.
Toyota’s internal documents provide more details, indicating that during a specific production period, debris of a certain size and amount may not have been properly cleared. This contamination can affect the engine assembly and put pressure on the main bearings, potentially causing them to fail if the engine operates at higher loads over time.
Dealerships in the U.S. were informed that affected vehicles might experience engine knocking, rough running, failure to start, or loss of power. Losing power at high speeds increases the risk of a crash.
The issue first came to Toyota’s attention in June 2022 after examining two pickup trucks with seized engines. Technicians suspected engine debris as the cause and continued investigating through May 2024.
To reduce engine contamination, Toyota has implemented cleanliness process changes at its engine manufacturing plants. By May 20, 2024, Toyota identified 166 Field Technical Reports and 824 warranty claims related to this issue from U.S. sources.
Toyota is still developing a remedy for the affected trucks and SUVs. They will reimburse owners who have already paid for repairs, and all recall work will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owners.
