  • Vin Diesel Vin Diesel’s stoic, gravelly-voiced Dominic Toretto from The Fast and the Furious could easily show up in any of his other roles, whether it’s Riddick or XXX. There’s something about the tough-guy-with-a-soft-spot demeanor that Diesel just owns.

  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Whether he’s Hobbs in Fast & Furious or saving the world in Jumanji, Dwayne Johnson essentially plays variations of the same ultra-charismatic action hero. There’s even a fan theory that all his movie roles are connected, as if Johnson’s characters are the same guy, just with different names!

  • Steven Seagal For decades, Steven Seagal has embodied the tough, unflappable hero who takes down bad guys without breaking a sweat. Seagal’s characters are almost always ex-military, out for justice, and apparently immune to bullets. Fun fact: He’s been “pregnant” (read: has had the same physique) for 20 years.

  • Kevin Hart Kevin Hart’s high-energy, fast-talking, funny-man routine is a staple in every movie he’s in. Whether he’s yelling his way through Jumanji or one of his numerous buddy comedies with Dwayne Johnson, Hart plays the same comedic archetype—loud and lovable.

  • Ryan Reynolds It doesn’t matter if it’s Deadpool, Free Guy, or The Hitman’s Bodyguard—Ryan Reynolds plays himself in every movie. His sarcastic, quick-witted persona has become his signature, which fans seem to love. Even his animated voiceover for Detective Pikachu feels like another version of Deadpool with fur.

  • Seth Rogen Seth Rogen has carved out a niche playing the lovable stoner in films like Pineapple Express, Neighbors, and This Is the End. Whether he’s cracking jokes or bumbling his way through situations, Rogen’s characters always seem to be extensions of his real-life personality.

  • Adam Sandler While Adam Sandler has stretched his acting chops in films like Uncut Gems and Punch Drunk Love, most of his characters—from Billy Madison to The Waterboy—are versions of his goofy, immature comedic persona. Fans know what they’re getting with Sandler: a lot of yelling and slapstick.

  • Mark Wahlberg Whether he’s playing a Boston cop, a Boston dad, or a Boston tough guy, Mark Wahlberg often seems like he’s playing a version of himself in nearly every movie. With his tough-guy charm, he rarely strays far from his comfort zone.

  • Michelle Rodriguez From Fast & Furious to Resident Evil, Michelle Rodriguez always plays the tough, no-nonsense woman who grew up with seven brothers and can kick anyone’s butt. Her roles are almost always a variation of the same fiercely independent character, usually in a white (or black) tank top.

While all of these actors are talented in their own ways, they’ve become so closely identified with certain personas that it’s hard to imagine them as anyone else. Whether it’s action, comedy, or a combination of both, these stars are the definition of playing themselves!
