Taiwan got hit by a really big earthquake on Wednesday, the strongest one there in 25 years. Sadly, it caused nine people to die and around 900 others got hurt. After it happened, there was a worry that a tsunami might come to parts of Japan and the Philippines, but thankfully that warning was lifted later on.
What happened in Taiwan and when? The earthquake hit the east coast of Taiwan at 7:58 am local time. It happened near Hualien City.
After the big earthquake, there were lots of smaller ones. In total, there were about 58 aftershocks. One of them was pretty big too, with a magnitude of 6.5. Some buildings, about 26 of them, collapsed because of the earthquake.
Most of them were in Hualien City, but one fell down on the west coast too. The earthquake was so strong that people in Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Xiamen, cities in China, could feel it too. There was also a worry about a tsunami hitting Taiwan, southern Japan, and the Philippines. In Japan, a small wave was detected near Yonaguni island, but nothing serious happened. The earthquake also caused landslides on a highway in Hualien. Part of the road collapsed because of it. Different agencies measured the earthquake differently. Japan said it was a 7.7 magnitude, Taiwan said it was 7.2, and the US Geological Survey reported it as 7.4.
