MANHATTAN, N.Y. — An 89-year-old comedian, known for her long-standing career, was attacked unprovoked on a Manhattan street, police reported. The victim, D’yan Forest, was sucker punched while walking to the gym near Seventh Avenue and West 11th Street at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
D’yan Forest, recognized as the oldest working female comedian globally, suffered a bruise to her left eye and stumbled to the ground after the unexpected assault. The suspect fled towards Greenwich Avenue and West 11th Street, according to authorities.
Forest, a daily swimmer, was on her way to Equinox in the West Village when she was attacked. “And all of a sudden, I feel something,” she recalled. She temporarily lost sight in her left eye and feared the injury might sideline her from performing. She is preparing for one of the biggest shows of her life, her 90th birthday show at Joe’s Pub next week.
Despite the assault, Forest remains determined. “I figured the world would come and pick me up, and I saw a woman across Greenwich Avenue,” she said. The suspect, described as a female wearing a tank top with a Jurassic Park logo, scowled at Forest before running off.
First responders quickly arrived and transported Forest to a local hospital for treatment. The police have released a photo of the suspect and are seeking the public’s help in identifying her.
Forest, who performs under the name Diana Shulman, is not just a comedian but a versatile entertainer. She has described herself as “a desperate Boston housewife, a New York night-club singer, and a Paris swinger.” Her career spans performances in New York, Edinburgh, Paris, and even Ethiopia. She is also a musician, playing instruments like the trumpet, drums, ukulele, and glockenspiel.
In January 2023, Forest performed her risqué stand-up routine on The Drew Barrymore Show, cementing her status as the oldest working female comedian at 88 years and 183 days old. Her dedication to her craft is evident, as she continues to perform in comedy clubs across Manhattan. This remarkable achievement has earned her a spot in the Guinness World Records.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the suspect or the incident to contact the NYPD. Forest’s resilience and commitment to her career remain unshaken as she prepares to celebrate her 90th birthday and return to the stage.
