The crisis has heightened so much in fact, that many believe immigration will be the turning point of the presidential election this year. Slate explains that President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump will need to implement a “border emergency” policy to take home the election.

The border breach comes hot on the heels of the controversial Texas Senate Bill, which would allow police to detain, arrest, and deport people suspected of crossing into the U.S. illegally if passed. The bill would also give judge’s more freedom over giving harsher criminal penalties in illegal border crossing cases.

The bill went into effect on March 19, 2024. Only hours after it was put into effect it was suspended as the U.S. Justice Department and immigration advocacy groups voiced concerns about the use of racial profiling.
