California Surpasses 2 Million Zero-Emission Vehicles Sold
California has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 2 million zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) sold, reaffirming its leadership in clean transportation.
Rapid Growth in ZEV Adoption
This achievement comes just over two years after California reached the 1 million ZEV sales mark, highlighting the rapid acceleration in the adoption of clean vehicles across the state.
Governor Newsom’s Commitment to Clean Transportation
Governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to propose a new version of the state’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Program (CVRP) if the incoming Trump Administration eliminates the federal ZEV tax credit.
The Clean Vehicle Rebate Program’s Impact
Before being phased out in 2023, the CVRP funded over 594,000 vehicles and saved more than 456 million gallons of fuel, significantly contributing to California’s clean air initiative.
Funding the Proposed Rebate Program
The proposed California rebates could be financed through the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which is supported by polluters under the state’s cap-and-trade program.
Governor Newsom’s Statement on ZEVs
Governor Newsom emphasized, “Consumers continue to prove the skeptics wrong – zero-emission vehicles are here to stay. We will intervene if the Trump Administration eliminates the federal tax credit, doubling down on our commitment to clean air and green jobs in California.”
ZEV Sales in the Third Quarter of 2024
In Q3 2024, Californians purchased 115,897 ZEVs, accounting for 26.4% of all new vehicle sales in the state, demonstrating the growing consumer preference for clean vehicles.
Expansion of Charging Infrastructure
To support the increasing number of ZEVs, California has installed 150,000 public or shared private electric vehicle chargers and over 500,000 at-home chargers statewide.
Federal Funding for Charging Stations
The state has been awarded over $32 million in federal funds to install, operate, and maintain 458 direct-current fast chargers along interstates and highways, with an additional $81.7 million approved for next year.
Support for Low-Income Californians
California offers thousands of dollars in grants and rebates for low-income residents to promote equitable access to clean transportation.
