SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom has called a special meeting of the California Legislature to make sure California’s core values, like civil rights, reproductive freedom, and climate action, are protected from the incoming Trump administration. The meeting will begin on December 2, and it aims to prepare California to fight back against any federal policies that might threaten the state.
“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle,” said Governor Newsom. “We are ready to do whatever it takes to support and protect Californians.”
Leaders Stand with the Governor
Top state officials are backing Governor Newsom. Attorney General Rob Bonta said his office is prepared to defend the rights of Californians. “We’ve been through this before, and we’re ready to protect California values,” he said.
Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) stressed the need to defend California’s progress. “We need to be ready for any challenges ahead,” he said. Senate President Mike McGuire (D-North Coast) also supported the Governor, warning that Trump’s policies could be harmful. “We’ve come too far to give up now,” McGuire said.
What the Special Meeting Will Do
The meeting will allow California to act quickly to protect itself. The plan is to give the state’s Department of Justice more resources to fight back in court if necessary. This funding will help California challenge any federal actions that go against the state’s laws or values, such as protecting women’s rights and climate policies.
Why It’s Important
Governor Newsom has a strong track record of fighting for progressive issues in California. Since becoming governor, he has signed over 25 laws to protect reproductive rights and invested more than $200 million in making sure patients and providers have the support they need. He has also led efforts to fight climate change by investing $45 billion in clean energy and environmental projects.
In addition, California has made great progress on immigrant protections and LGBTQ+ rights. Newsom helped repeal Prop 8, ensuring marriage equality in the state constitution this year. All of these accomplishments could be at risk if the Trump administration tries to roll back these policies.
California Is Ready for the Challenge
Governor Newsom and other state leaders are getting ready for a series of legal fights. With this special meeting and more funding for legal action, California is preparing to protect its residents and continue being a leader in social justice and environmental efforts. “We will not back down,” Newsom said.
